Design and Build
The sleek, glossy black coating on this player gives it a hint of modern sophistication, but its simplicity is not too imposing and an added benefit for low entry level users. The front has a slide out disc tray located in the center. Just to the right, you’ll find very simple playback controls next to a digital display. HDMI output, stereo analog outs, digital audio coaxial output, composite and component video outs is more than adequate for even the intermediate techno-geek. The only thing really missing from the BD640 is that it doesn’t provide 3-D (though it does play 3-D content), but 3-D titles aren’t exactly in great supply anyway, and not everyone prefers 3-D. Other than that, all the features needed to integrate it into you’re home entertainment system are plentiful. It handles Blu-ray discs, DVDs to 1080p — which produces HD-like quality — CDs, CD-RWs and BD-ROM. The BD640 also provides ways to watch videos, listen to music and view family photos from USB storage devices via the USB Media Host that’s built into the system. The BD640 also utilizes LG’s Simplink connectivity, so that all HDMI-connected devices can be controlled through the TV remote. Netflix, Youtube, Vudu and CinemaNow can all be accessed once an Internet connection is made. It also takes full advantage of Blu-ray format technology by providing BD Live access. BD Live offers video interactive content, such as previews, movie extras, synopses and even the ability to give the movies you watched a rating. Also available are special bonus view features that offer the ability to alternate between movie scenes and additional movie features on the same disc.
