What Is Blu-Ray?

Bu-Ray is the next generation of high density DVD’s that are designed for the play back of high definition/HD movies. The name Blu-ray comes from the color of the laser used to read and write data on the optical disc. Older CD’s and DVD’s used a red laser to read and write data from the optical disc. The blue laser has a smaller wavelength that packs the data into a smaller. This allows the DVD disc to hold significantly more data. A single layer Blu-ray disc can hold up to 25GB while a dual layer dick can hold up to 50gb. The storage capacity of a Blu-ray disc is 10 times larger than that of a standard DVD.

Another advantage to the Blu-ray technology is that it allows enhanced interactivity. It supports many graphical enhancements, multi-languages and built in Picture in Picture (PiP). These enhanced discs allow the viewer to access pop-up menus, graphics, commentaries and bonus material – while the main movie is playing.

Blu-ray is now supported by over 200 of the worlds leading consumer electronics manufacturers. The format is also supported by all of the major Hollywood studios and smaller studios as well.

Should you upgrade from your current DVD player to a Blu-ray player. The simple answer is yes – especially if you have a HDTV. Blu-ray players have the capability of playing back 180i HD video, which is absolutely stunning on an HDTV. Blu-ray also has the ability to store the audio portion of the video in an un-compressed format, greatly enhancing the audio experience as well.

Early on many people were hesitant to purchase a Blu-ray player because of the competing HD-DVD format that was on the market as a competitor. Both formats battled for several years until Blu-ray ultimately won the format battle and became the industry standard. A consumer can now purchase a Blu-ray player without fear.

Another common question is whether a consumer’s current DVD collection will play on a Blu-ray player. The answer is yes. Most manufacturers Blu-ray players are backwards compatible and will read standard DVD’s as well as Blu-ray discs. Your standard DVD’s will likely look better when played back on a Blu-ray player as most players have a built in up scaling that plays your standard DVD’s back at 1080p. When looking at players make sure that the model you are looking at supports standard DVD playback with up scaling.

There is no question Blue-ray is here to stay and that a Blu-ray player will make a noticeable improvement to any consumers home theater system. If you are a movie buff and love special features and bonus material Blu-ray is definately a must have. The added storage space allows movie studios the ability to add much more additional content than on standard DVD’s.

DVD’s are quickly dropping in price and are available at most major electronics retailers and on the Internet. Although not at DVD player levels yet, they are now extremely affordable and worth the small premium paid for the added quality.
